Just like you and I, our city employees are sheltering and working from home. I cannot over emphasize the importance of all of us complying with the Stay At Home order. This is not just for your protection; it is for the protection of your family, friends, and neighbors.
When you stay home…you save lives…and on behalf of our city, I thank you for doing your part.
Remember, if you do have to go out for essential needs, keep at least 6 feet of distance from another person and wash your hands regularly.
Here in Hawthorne, all city buildings and park facilities will remain closed and all city meetings and events are canceled until further notice.
As your city councilman I can promise that essential city services will continue and as the Chair of the South Bay Regional Public Communications Authority I guarantee that paramedic, fire and police services will be there when you call.
I’ve directed our city staff to maintain direct contact with county, state and federal authorities, especially the Los Angeles County Public Health Department, to coordinate public safety activities and take needed precautions.
Hawthorne now has a moratorium on parking enforcement during street sweeping so you can keep your cars parked on city streets as you shelter in place.
I am personally in contact with our county, state and federal elected officials to make sure that Hawthorne is represented and receiving all the support we need.
Although we are all staying in place, I do encourage you to safely reach out to your neighbors—especially seniors—and check on their wellbeing. You can talk through doors and use the phone to stay in contact. As “Good Neighbors” let us help one another. We can do this and still be safe.
Finally, there is no need to panic. While it is normal to have a sense of anxiousness and uncertainty, let us never forget that we are the ‘City of Good Neighbors.’ Now more than ever, we need to help and protect each other—not abandon our values.
My family and I continue to pray for you—our residents—our city, state and country as we combat this disease with optimism and hope but above all, neighborliness.
I know we will rise to meet this challenge and will be stronger for it. This condition won’t last forever and eventually, our situation will return to normal. Let us pray that normal comes sooner rather than later.
